Beauty 101 – How To Curl Hair With Flat Irons

This post is sponsored by Suave Professionals.

One of the most frequent questions I’m emailed is about how to curl hair with flat irons and today, I’m thrilled to be answering this! It is my go-to daily hairstyle and once you know how, it’s truly so easy – just follow these three steps!

Main Photo Beauty 101 How To Curl Hair With Flat Irons

Step One: Blow dry your hair. Before starting I always use a blow dry spray, this new Suave Professionals Luxe Style Infusion Volumizing Weightless Blow Dry Spray is fantastic. I never used to use a blow dry spray, but I’ve personally found this is key to creating salon-style hair at home.

Step Two: Curl your hair using a flat iron. It’s actually really simple when you know how – just follow my instructions below.

Step Three: Brush through your hair to loosen and soften the curls (you don’t want prom style curls!). You can choose to finish with hairspray, this Suave Professionals Luxe Style Infusion Smoothing Anti-Humidity Hairspray is great for setting your style and keeping it sleek all day.

Suave Professionals Blow Dry Spray Beauty 101 How To Curl Hair With Flat Irons
How To Curl Hair With Flat Irons:

  1. After blow-drying, add a blow dry spray such as Suave Professionals Luxe Infusion Volumizing Weightless Blow Dry Spray. Turn your flat irons on (these GHD irons have been my go-to’s for 10+ years) and allow them to heat up.
  2. For extra smooth, frizz-free curls, I quickly run the flat irons through my hair, all over.
  3. Curl the hair in sections. I generally start at the bottom of my ear downwards (tying everything above it up in a bun). Then I work up to the top of my head in two-inch height sections.
  4. You can now start curling this bottom section. This is the part to master (when I first learned, for the first few sections I had no idea, but pretty quickly it becomes second nature and so easy):

-  To curl your left side, hold your irons in your right hand, the top of your hand should face away from your body, your palm facing in and thumb towards the sky.

-  Put the opening end of the irons (with the hot plates) towards the back of your head, the irons should be aligned almost entirely horizontal with a slight tilt down towards the back of your neck.

-  Place the top of your hair strand (near the roots) inside the two hot plates. Pull down a little to where you want the curls to start (for a looser, more relaxed beachy feel, allow a couple of inches).

-  You should still be holding the iron with the top of your hand facing away from your body, your palm facing inwards.

-  Now twist your hand up and over, so the top of your hand is now facing in towards your head and your palm is facing outwards. (Remember, the irons should be almost horizontal, with a slight angle down towards the back of your neck). You always want the curls to pull away from the face.

-  Keep your hand in this position and slowly pull the iron down through to the end of your hair.

-  To avoid any kinks or iron marks, keep the irons moving – you don’t need to hold it in place to make the curl.  GHD irons are so hot they curl the hair immediately (which is why I love them!).

Repeat this process for all hair in the section and continue until all hair is curled. I usually take pieces of hair about an inch wide (if I’m in a rush and need to work really quickly, I use wider pieces).

You will now have gorgeous curls! Be sure to brush through and loosen them a little, then finish with a good spray to keep the style in place, I like Suave Professionals Luxe Smooth Anti-Humidity Hairspray.

Meet Our Head Stylist…

I’m thrilled to introduce you to this week’s Head Stylist, Ann from Step Inside My Closet! I was delighted to have Ann as a Co-Host of Friday’s Fab Favorites this past weekend – and I simply adored this look she recently linked up!

anncollage2 Style Sessions Fashion Link Up: Latest Looks You Vote

STYLE Q&A WITH ANN:

How would you describe your style? Traditional girl by heart, with a twist of appreciation for new trends and street style!

Which fashion trend are you currently loving? I am loving the current trend of graphic t-shirts, sweaters, etc. It gives a fashionable girl a way of making a statement whether she’s off to the gym, her job, or a night out with friends. It’s all in the versatility of making your statement fashionable.

What inspired you to start your blog? Everyone was always so inquisitive on where I got my things! Although sometimes they were items on repeat, people still thought I was wearing new clothes everyday, so my new hobby became perfecting my style! I then decided to combine my love of writing and my hobby of styling into my blog.

Name a couple beauty products you couldn’t live without: You are what you eat! So my first thing I couldn’t live without is tons of water. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! It elevates your mood and leaves you with glowing skin. My second must have is veggies! I love making my own avocado masks because it leaves my face feeling incredibly soft and fresh. Lastly, I love taking epsom salt baths to rid my body of any toxins. I love finding epsom salts infused with lavender for some relaxation.

What is your best beauty trick? If your eyes are feeling tired I love putting cold green or black tea bags on my eyes to wake them up a little bit. Then, instead of using black liner along the lower bottom lashes, which makes your eyes look smaller, sometimes I use a deep olive or emerald color with a little bit of shimmer to line my eyes with instead. It instantly brightens up your eyes!

What is your favorite (or dream) vacation destination? New York City! Every corner of New York is a different trend, it’s an eclectic and shimmering jewelry box of fashion!

Tell us something not many people know about you? I was bullied very profusely in school and instead of that taking power over me, I turned it into leaving the small town bubble behind of the nasty girls. I then opened myself up to engaging readers and friends to not dwell on my past, but focus on a fabulous future of fashion, travel, and embracing the positive things in life.

Fab Favorites Link Up: My New Stuart Weitzman Boots on Sale

Happy Friday! I hope you’ve enjoyed a beautiful week, mine has been so much fun in New York. Have you seen my NYFW runway reports for the Mara Hoffman and Zimmermann shows? I am so excited for fall already and basically want everything in their collections!

Oh and I have to quickly tell you my incredible purchase of the week… I got these Stuart Weitzman boots on sale – 50% off! There is a big sale on at the moment and everything is so gorgeous, I’m delighted I found a pair of these iconic boots at such a great price. I was trying to decide between these ‘FIFO’ tall flat boots and these suede heeled boots, I adored both (and wish I could have got both!), but went for these suede boots and they are perfection! The photos really don’t do them justice, they’re amazing in real-life (side-note, all the Stuart Weitzman shoes fit ‘true to size’).

It’s sooo cold in NYC today (currently 4°F!), needless to say I’m spending most of the day inside. Inspired by this, I wanted to share some of my cool-weather favorites – the best part is, most are currently on sale (and they’re timeless, so you’ll be able to wear them right now and next season too).

What is your go-to in cold weather? I have recently stocked up on cashmere sweaters, they are perfect for layering and oh-so-soft to wear (fun fact, cashmere is 50% warmer than wool). I’m also obsessed with these leather tech gloves (they allow you to use your touch-screen phone) and I’ve been living in this classic hat – it’s the perfect touch to an outfit and keeps you so warm!

New York Fashion Week Runway Report – Zimmermann Fall 2015 Show

Following my recap of the Tadashi Shoji and Mara Hoffman shows at New York Fashion Week, today I’m thrilled to share one of the hottest labels (Olivia Palermo is a major fan). Ladies, you’re in for a treat – this is the stunning Zimmermann Fall 2015 collection…

I am always fascinated by stories of where designers gain their inspiration and Nicky Zimmermann painted such a beautiful picture with hers, “I have vivid memories of growing up in suburban Sydney and my parents hosting, what I thought at the time, were very glamorous dinner parties. It was less about the clothes and the setting, and maybe more about that feeling of excitement and sense of occasion, which created a starting point for the collection. I’ve worked with an offbeat but dynamic colour palette influenced from various interiors references of the 60s. This season I wanted to work with a more streamlined and elongated A-line silhouette so the collection was more structured, and less free and flowing than last season”.

13 New York Fashion Week Runway Report – Zimmermann Fall 2015 Show Zimmermann Fall 2015 Collection: This coat is everything… I need it in my life!

Exuding bohemian luxe and an ethereal whimsy Zimmermann is renowned for, the collection features paisley prints, soft pastels, chic pops of rich color, lace, gold embellishments and of course one of the most fabulous hat collections I’ve seen in a long time (further fueling my addition to this must-have accessory).

In addition to stunning clothes, fashion week is also pivotal for setting the direction for beauty and hair trends. Zimmermann’s nod to 60’s style was infused with modern execution of bold black eyeliner, nude lips and soft hair pulled back into loose pony tails.

A scan of those coveted front row seats found none other than style queen Olivia Palermo, as well as starlets including Jessica Szohr, Jess Hart and Alexandra Agoston.

I’d love to know your thoughts, what are your favorite pieces in the collection? I am obsessed with all those incredible coats – the colors are perfection (I need that long pink coat, pictured above, in my life)! I’ve proclaimed my love of effortless style many times and season after season Zimmermann embodies this implicitly. You can find and shop the entire Zimmermann collection here!

New York Fashion Week Runway Report – Mara Hoffman Fall 2015 Show

As promised, I’m excited to share some of my adventures at New York Fashion Week! It’s been a brilliant week so far and I’ve been privileged to see some incredible shows, including Mara Hoffman, Tommy Hilfiger, Zimmermann and Jay Godfrey among others. The long and short of it is, we’ve got some gorrrgeous fashion to look forward to!

Over the next few days I will be sharing them all with you and today, we’ll start things with the Mara Hoffman Fall 2015 show. I adore the neutral tones, earthy pops of color, striking prints and most of all, the stunning gold metallic details. In addition to clothing, fashion week also highlights major hair and beauty trends – and based on the Mara Hoffman Fall 2015 show, it looks like boho-chic braids will definitely be in!

I’d love to hear your thoughts, which looks do you love most? What colors are you excited to see in Fall fashion?

Meet Our Head Stylist..

I’m thrilled to introduce you to this week’s Head Stylist, Chelsea from Ginger Side of Life! I love this chic Winter look she recently shared on her blog…

chelsea collage3 Style Sessions Fashion Link Up: Chambray and Tulle

STYLE Q&A WITH CHELSEA:

How would you describe your style? Classic and feminine meets preppy with a splash of leather edginess.

Which fashion trend are you currently loving? I am not sure if it is a trend, but I am literally head over heels in love with turtlenecks. I know, kind of lame, but no joke, love them to pieces. I talk about loving them so much at work, that my office mate now indulges me every time I wear a turtleneck by saying, “ooo, love your turtleneck.” Then we burst out laughing because I really love them that much and basically have set up weekly compliments from my office mate to boost my turtleneck ego!

What inspired you to start your blog? The short version is that at the end of 2013, I resolved to get a hobby. Sounds harsh but its the truth. I had been spending so much time consumed at work that I suddenly realized I had no hobbies but work. So I was laying in bed, browsing blogs and decided, “yes, I will start a blog, that will be my new hobby.” And oh what a rude awakening for my previously hobby-less self because starting a blog is no easy feat. I can proudly say, now almost a year in, my hobby has turned into an entirely new set of coding, photoshop, and wordpress skills that I could never have accomplished without the drive to “get a hobby.” Also, I learned how much I truly love playing dress up. So my 2013 resolution is most likely the first and last resolution I set for myself, because between you and me, resolutions are a dangerous time commitment!

Name a couple beauty products you couldn’t live without: the NARS skin care line, Benefit High Beam complexion enhancer and this Chanel lipstick.

What is your best beauty trick? Floss. Not joking. I mean how many times have you been to the dentist and he/she said, “you really should floss more.” Well, aside from basic hygiene, after every time I floss, I feel like my smile is bigger and what is a better outfit complement than a beautiful smile?

What is your favorite (or dream) vacation destination? Cinque Terre, Italy. I visited while still in college with my boyfriend and we both fell in love with the quaint town of Riomaggiore. I love that it feels like time stops there. People are playing chess on benches, waves crashing on ancient cliffs and the absence of cars makes it easy to imagine what life would have been like years before.

Tell us something not many people know about you? When I was in 5th and 6th grade, I participated in an American Girl Fashion Show in Los Angeles. One guess who I was? Any takers?
