Style Sessions: Fashion Link Up – Wardrobe Essentials

Welcome to Style Sessions! Lately I’ve been thinking of downsizing my wardrobe a little, but I find it so difficult to part with pieces and as a result have accumulated so.many.things.

What I’ve realized is that despite having a decade worth of clothes, I often wear the same items and simply dress them up or down with accessories and jewels. It would be safe to say one of my all time favorite wardrobe essentials are tailored black shorts. If you’ve been visiting Style Sessions long enough, I’m sure you have noticed this! So today, I wanted to share with you some of the other basic wardrobe pieces I believe every woman should own – and the best part is, they’re eternally chic and almost all under $100!

I’m also still obsessed with my favorite finds last week – and it seems you are too! For those who emailed to tell me you’d bought the Peplum Plate Belt or J.Crew Polka Dot Sweater, I absolutely can’t wait to see how you style them! Our beautiful Co-Hosts for Friday’s Fab Favorites Link Up last week were Jessica from Afternoon Style and Natalia from Ma Nouvelle Mode, they both have such great style, so if you’re looking for a little extra inspiration today, be sure to head over and say hi! Also, if you’re interested in Co-Hosting the Friday’s Fab Favorites Link Up, just send me an email for more details.

In case you’re new here, Style Sessions is live every Tuesday from 5am PST. It’s all about sharing what we’ve been wearing, or if you’re on a budget, a virtual outfit you’d love to wear! Every week I also select someone to showcase as ‘Head Stylist’ in the next edition – it’s a brilliant way to showcase your personal style and your blog.

Wardrobe Essentials…

As mentioned, I’ve been thinking about the wardrobe pieces I own that I simply can’t live without – and at the top of that list are my favorite tailored black shorts. Dress them up with heels and a blazer, or down with cute flats and a vibrant top, they’re a style essential and one that, season after season, simply doesn’t date. What is one wardrobe piece you could not give up?

Love shorts as much as I do? These are my top picks:

Stripe Shorts (on sale!)   |  Black Tailored Shorts   |   Leather Shorts   |  Bow Front Shorts   |   Ombre Jacquard Shorts

Meet Our Head Stylist…

I’m excited to introduce you to the fabulous Kristen from The Mrs. & The Momma! Not only does Kristen have gorgeous style, she is one of the nicest gals out there! I adored this outfit she linked up recently…

What is your go-to look?  My go-to look is usually a graphic tee and either a tube or maxi skirt with a hat. I can’t wait for cooler weather here in Texas so I can get layering!

There are so many fashion trends right now, which on are you currently loving? I am loving the leather trend right now!  It’s such a great trend to incorporate into our wardrobe a little or a lot. A leather pencil skirt is on my short list of must-haves this fall and I just bought a fab leather-sleeved gray v-neck that I adore!

What inspired you to start The Mrs. & The Momma? I’ve blogged for almost five years, but about two years ago after having my fourth child, I needed to kick start my style, as I felt I had lost it. That’s when I started posting about what I wore in an effort to explore my style, take risks, and hopefully inspire others that might need a little push to try new things clothing-wise.

Name three beauty products you couldn’t live without: Suave Keratin Dry Shampoo, Lash Blast mascara (the orange tube), and my husband’s Burberry Touch…I just love the smell so much that I wear it too!

How would you describe your style? My style is a combination of classic, trendy and a little boho…it depends on which day you catch me!

  3. You’re owning those black shorts! LOVE.

  4. Definitely that list is perfect! Loved that you include the statement necklace!

  6. You are so rocking it in shorts….I love all your recent looks! And a classic tailored blazer is FOREVER!

  7. Surprisingly (because I don’t own any), I love love your neon outfit. You don’t find a lot of super vivid colors in vintage, so to see it done well is a welcome sight. Beautiful.

  8. Melanie Riordan says:

I definitely must get a pair of nude heels! But my go-to is probably my jeans!

  9. I’d wear all your essentials and I also adore Kristen’s blog.

  10. I am a shorts kind of girl too!

  11. I agree that black dress shorts is a great staple to have in your closet. Since I only wear shorts on the weekend, I don’t own a pair of black dressy shorts. All of my shorts are very casual. Love all the ways you styled your shorts.

  12. Tailored pieces in black are a great foundation for any wardrobe. Love these picks!

  13. I couldn’t agree more on these wardrobe essentials. Especially the tailored blazer and white tee. Now all I need is a leather purse! Thanks for the great link-up every week!

  14. As a regular reader, I *have* noticed your personal faves, and I get inspired by the ways you remix them. I’m happy to say that I have collected all the pieces in your essentials list except for one — I don’t have a leopard belt but I do have a leopard scarf that I sometimes use as a belt… does that count? ;)

  15. Love those heels! Thank you for hosting the link up :)

  16. I love how you style your shorts! And those nude heels in your essentials list are to die for…love the ankle strap tend.
    Style of One’s Own

  17. That is also my favorite among your outfits. You can never go wrong with black shorts, for me it matches everything! But of course, I love how you dress it up and accessorize your whole outfit. :)

  18. I always love your link up. So many fashionable bloggers and ideas. As always you look great.

  19. Wardrobe Essentials are basic pieces to build a wardrobe around. Loving yours and this post was very helpful, also. I also love the Blazer that The Mrs. and the Momma is wearing.

Have a Great Tuesday Ms. Lauren.

    Ada. =)

  20. I had noticed that those shorts were your fav :) but when you love something, you always find yourself reaching for them over and over again! Love the nude ASOS heels you picked out… and I agree with everything else on your essentials list too!

  21. These are all great essentials, Lauren! I especially love the nude heels. =) Thanks so much for this linkup opportunity!

  23. i love all of your outfits with shorts. such great outfit inspiration!!

  24. I totally agree about having these key pieces in your wardrobe. Loving those nude heels.

  25. I could not have picked a better collection of closet staples. Absolutely agree on every one of your choices! I would also add a go-to pair of jeans in a dark rinse that make your butt look perky :) lol Good luck purging your wardrobe! I just donated a bunch of clothes too as I switched things up for fall. Feels good to let go!

  26. Big yes to all your wardrobe essentials– thanks for the link-up, Lauren!

Kristin looks fabulous– love how she’s wearing the prints– the green shade just pops against the black and grays.

  27. I need nude heels. I have wedges but somehow have never bought basic pumps.

    Linking up today :)

  28. Loving the black heels and pants!

  31. I love your blog!!

So sorry, but I’m really new at blogging… How do I put the link-up button in my sidebar? Do you provide the Javascript for it?

  32. those heels and those skinny pants need in my wardrobe NOW! Love all your essentials :)

  33. i love your scarves. :) So classy! Thanks for the linkup!

  34. pretty!

Come visit me today and support this single mom Alissa by liking her page pretty please????

  35. You are going to break my bank, girl! Your link-ups always leave me drooling, and my shopping wishlist has gotten out of control!
I wish I were more of a true “fashion blogger” – in the sense that I don’t really have the tools to do stunning photo-shoots like many who link up. Hopefully, everyone can forgive me for that! I’m trying to get back into making fun sets on Polyvore, if I ever find some time!
My wardrobe piece that I could not live without is my Gator Lacrosse hoodie! I know that isn’t very fashionable, but as a college student, it counts as appropriate attire on most class days! I love supporting my school and my team, while still being comfy. And yes, I’m that weird girl that wears a hoodie in the middle of FL’s hot summers – I’m always freezing indoors! On the more fashion-forward end, I would have to say I need a good collection of solid colored v-neck or scoopneck tees. I surprisingly didn’t have a simple white tee for the LONGEST time. I have no clue how I functioned without one!
I love your shorts picks! Being a FL girl, I’m always on the hunt for comfy, but classy shorts. I have to say though, I think you look SO gorgeous every time you break out some jeans! You just have the perfect body for them (or perfect jeans, or both…)!

    Happy blogging everyone!

  36. Your new hair is so fabu!!!! I love it and can’t wait to see some more pics! ANd – I CANT BELIEVE JULIA R. tweeted about it!!!! (But I do) THAT IS SOOOO AWESOME!!!!! You GO GIRL!
