Friday Faves: How To Make Your Hair Grow Fast

Some of you may remember a few years ago I cut my hair really short into a lob, which was a huge change. I did it spur of the moment at the hairdresser and hadn’t told Chris of my plans (as they actually didn’t exist until I got into the salon chair), so it was hilarious coming home that night and seeing his rather surprised reaction!

So to cut a long story, well, short… having short hair was not what I expected. I’d had long hair for years, pretty much all my adult life. It wasn’t until I cut it short that I realised how much I LOVED just being able to throw my hair up in a top knot or high pony tail on days I couldn’t be bothered styling it (or on those days you really need to wash your hair but are feeling lazy AF).

When you have short hair, those options are gone. You literally have to wash your hair and style it… ALL. THE. TIME.

How To Make Your Hair Grow Fast fashion beauty blogger tips

I desperately wanted to know how to make your hair grow fast! So I researched it and wanted to share my tried and true tricks for making this happen. After a few months, the photographer I work with for my blog started asking me if I was wearing hair extensions because she couldn’t believe how fast my hair had grown or how thick it had become. This was a few years ago now and I’ve continued the routine to maintain long, thick, soft hair. I am not a massive fan of hair extensions, I find permanent ones uncomfortable and I just want to wake up and have gorgeous hair – without clipping it in.

Here’s what I’ve personally done and the products I’ve used to make my hair grow fast. If you have a tip, trick or suggestion, please leave a comment below and share! Do you like having short hair or long hair? I’d also love to hear why you prefer it!

TIP 1: NO ‘POO

Don’t over shampoo (it’s the no ‘poo trend), this strips your hair of its natural oils. By reducing your shampoo routine, you can actually train your hair to become less oily… it’s a viscous cycle, the more you shampoo, the more your scalp and hair dries out. So your skin tries to produce more oil to counteract the dryness. By reducing your shampoo frequency, hair enjoys more of it’s natural oils, has less frizz, is exposed to less harsh chemicals and all this ultimately makes your healthier.

After following this routine, I’ve trained by hair to reach a nice natural balance – not too dry, not too oily – so now I only need to wash my hair twice a week.

TIP 2: AVOID HARSH CHEMICALS

I touched on this above, but there are so many harsh chemicals in our skincare and beauty products these days. Even when products are marketed as “natural”, some really aren’t all that natural… it’s more important than ever to actually read the ingredients list. I know it can all seem like a bunch of long, complex and difficult to pronounce words, so I’ll break it down for you.

The main ingredients to avoid are:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): a surfactant, detergent and foaming agent used in industrial cleaners. These are a strong skin irritant and produces nitrosamine, a substance that has been reportedly linked to cancer formation.

Isopropyl Alcohol: this is frequently used in shampoos because it cuts through oil. However, like sulfates, isopropyl alcohol’s main concern is that it’s extremely drying and strips your hair of it’s natural oils and moisture. We all know dry hair equals frizzy hair, which is more susceptible to breaking and damage (especially when using heat tools).

Triclosan: this chemical actually has a moderate hazard rating and should absolutely be avoided. Exposure to this nasty chemical can keep our body in a state of toxicity (including organ toxicity), cause eye and skin irritation, as well as endocrine disruption.

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): This is a carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that reduces the skin’s natural moisture and reportedly has been linked to cancer. A really common ingredient found in skincare and cosmetic products, this harsh chemical contains significant dioxin levels, often found as a by-product of the ethoxylation process in manufacturing.

TIP 3: TAKE PRENATAL VITAMINS

Yes! That’s right… prenatal vitamins are packed with some of the best nutrients to really help your body run at an optimal level. Side note, leaving a packet laying around is also a fabulous way to scare your boyfriend or husband if you’re not currently trying for a baby! But seriously, these things work. You’ll notice your hair and nails grow really fast, plus I’ve found it’s also been great for my skin. Why should you only take amazing vitamins when you’re trying for a baby? They’re obviously good for your body, so I think taking a vitamin-packed supplement anytime is good.

TIP 4: GET REGULAR TRIMS

I know, it seems counter-intuitive to cut your hair when you’re trying to grow it. This tip actually took me a long time to wrap my head around… but when I’d read interviews with celebrity hairdressers, this one just kept coming up time and again. I started getting a trim (just under an inch off) every 10-12 weeks and it’s really helped boost the health and condition of my hair.

Studies have actually shown that the people get regular trims vs. those people who don’t, actually have longer hair. When you don’t get a trim, your split ends spread further up the hair shaft, causing hair to weaken and be more likely to snap off. This is particularly exacerbated when using heat tools… and no one loves a flat-iron hair cut. So girls, get a trim!

Friday Faves – Blonde Hair Color Ideas

Do you want to know something crazy? I haven’t colored my hair in almost three years. It all started because after years and years of coloring my hair, from super blonde when I was younger to a really dark brunette tone four years ago, I realized I didn’t actually know what my real hair color was anymore. So I set out on a mission to go au natural and let my color grow out. Now, given it’s been two months shy of three years, the color I have is entirely mine and the hair is in such great, untouched condition.

Lately though, I’ve had this urge to shake things up and am tempted to lighten my hair a little. But then the other part of me thinks, you’ve come so far and it’s taken three years to grow your color out… what’s a girl to do?

of course in preparation, I have been looking on Pinterest at some blonde hair color ideas and wanted to share my faves with you.

Have you ever set out on a mission with your hair? What was it? Have you grown your hair color out at some point? Did you start coloring again and if so, what made you decide to leap back in?

Friday Faves: Scary Truth About Counterfeit Cosmetics – What You Need To Know

I was watching Life of Kylie this week and found the exposé on counterfeit cosmetics, in particular black market Kylie Cosmetics, immensely interesting – and disturbing. I then came across a short documentary from Refinery29 where they went to Santee Alley in Downtown Los Angeles’ notorious shopping district. They discovered street markets filled with popular cosmetic products including Kylie Cosmetics, Anastasia Beverly Hills and M.A.C at deeply discounted prices. But remember as the old saying goes, if it seems too good to be true, it usually is…

The video below shares insight into how undercover counterfeit cosmetics busts are carried out and the length companies like Estée Lauder go to in protecting their brand and importantly, us as consumers. Thank goodness they do! Hearing the ingredients used in fake cosmetic products is scary and the dirty, unregulated conditions they’re made in leaves you shuddering at the thought of putting them on your face.

The Scary Truth About Counterfeit Cosmetics blog post how to spot a fake beauty product

Through seeing this, you realize how careful you need to be about where you buy cosmetics. I’ve never bought beauty or makeup products from a street vendor, but over the years I have got a few things from eBay thinking they were the real deal. After watching this, I would never do it again… you just don’t know where they’re from! Fake beauty products can look almost identical to the real thing, however as the video below shows, the ingredients are very different and potentially dangerous.

Learning about black market beauty products made me more aware of this issue and I had to share it with you too. Counterfeit cosmetics are something we all need to know about. If you’re going to shop outside retail or department stores, it’s important to learn how to tell whether a beauty product is fake.

Have you ever seen counterfeit cosmetics in real life? Did they look authentic? I’d love to hear your thoughts, leave a comment below and I’ll email you back – let’s chat!

Counterfeit Cosmetics From Kylie Cosmetics, M.A.C and more…

I hope this information helps to keep you safe from buying counterfeit cosmetics. Please leave a comment and share your thoughts, I’m interested to chat about this more.

Style Sessions: My Wedding Hair Style – Ideas for Brides and Bridesmaids

As a bride, you have so many decisions to make! I have always been someone who knows exactly what I like… and what I don’t. Everyone who knows me, also knows all too well how notoriously particular I can be and what a perfectionist I am with everything. When it came to finding the wedding hair style that was juuust right, I spent countless hours browsing Pinterest but couldn’t find a photo of a bride with the exact hair I wanted for the day. Instead, I narrowed it down to three styles and found the most incredible hairdresser that was able to just get my vision and merge the elements of each that I loved to create the perfect wedding hair style for me.

I wanted to share a little more about my own bridal hair chignon, as well as the gorgeous bridesmaid hair styles my sister and best friends wore on the day… and of course our amazing hairdresser, Holly Stewart, who created them all beautifully and was an absolute delight to share the morning with.

My Wedding Hair Style – Ideas for Brides and Bridesmaids

When choosing a bridal hair style, I had a few criteria the looks under consideration had to meet. First and foremost, it had to be a wedding hair style that could last the entire day and look as fabulous at the end as it did at the start… enduring hours of dancing, along with summer heat, humidity, a cathedral length veil and lots of guest hugs! After chatting with Holly about it, she confirmed what I had suspected… the only way to ensure this was with an up-do.

I found a few styles I liked and explained to Holly which parts I wanted to use from each to create the perfect wedding hair style for me. Some of my other specifics included a naturally finger brushed back look, sweeping one side back above my ears (to ‘lift’ my face and not drag it down) and have a effortless twist at the back, without anything too fussy or over-styled.

I also loved Morgan Stewart’s wedding hair style and used this effortlessly polished vibe for inspiration. Holly added the perfect finishing touch of bringing my chignon out to the sides so front-on in photos, you could see I still had a nice full head of hair.

bridal chignon wedding hair style bride hair styles bridesmaid pony tail loose curls I loved my bridal chignon, Holly Stewart did the most incredible job styling our hair.

When I was explaining it all (in my very specific and detail oriented way), I thought “oh gosh, no one is ever going to understand what I am envisaging”… but Holly is absolutely incredible and just ‘got it’ straight away. It was such a relief to know that on the day I didn’t have to worry… I knew I was in the best hands with Holly and could feel completely relaxed and excited.

On the day, I loved that Holly styled most of my hair early in the day so I could then relax, chat with my bridesmaids and have my makeup done. Then, when everything else was done and I was about to get dressed, Holly finished the chignon and worked in so wonderfully to help me achieve the perfect side-swept fringe, juuust the way I love it (as I said earlier, I am a notorious perfectionist! #sorrynotsorry).

My bridesmaids were also incredibly happy with their hair. I love juxtapositions, so mixing high and low elements was what I wanted for the bridesmaids to create an easy, effortless look. They wore the most gorgeous rose gold sequin dresses, so I thought loose waves and a fun, high pony tail would be just right to add an effortless elegance. I was obsessed with how their hair turned out!

Even my sister, who has short hair and always wanted to try loose waves (but never had anyone get it right) was over-the-moon with how Holly did her style. At least once a week, she will still say to me, “I wish I could get my hair how Holly did it!”. If you have bridesmaids with different length hair (or people who just feel more comfortable with it up or down), this was a great way to tailor the style individually, while still having an overall vibe for the bridesmaids that fit together.

I felt it made the biggest difference to work with a hair stylist who just ‘got it’ instantly and was so kind, patient, accommodating and supremely talented. I also remember thanking Holly for having such a beautifully calm and relaxed vibe, she is the perfect energy to have around on the morning of your wedding and made me feel so at ease.

When choosing a hair stylist for your wedding, it’s obviously essential to have someone really talented who works efficiently, but remember it’s also important to have people around who will bring a fabulous energy to the day and fit in well with your bridal party. #GoodVibesOnly! We were all absolutely thrilled with Holly Stewart for both these reasons, she’s the total hair stylist package and I feel so lucky that we were all able to have such perfect hair on my wedding day.

Friday Faves: 6 Best Spring Lipstick Colors with AMAZING Reviews

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to update your style each season is makeup! I wanted to share some of the best spring lipstick colors with you, a swipe of one of these beauties will instantly elevate any outfit.

Whether you have a date night to dress up for, fun girls brunch or simply want to add a pretty touch to a classic tee and jeans combo, lipstick is your answer! Here are the best of the best spring lipsticks – oh and it’s not just me who thinks so, they each have incredible reviews.

best spring lipstick colors estee lauder pure color and ysl lipstick review

I am wearing Estee Lauder Pure Color Lipstick in Impassioned. I found this last year on a cruise holiday for my birthday and bought it as a little ‘gift to self’. It’s one of my favorite lipsticks, the color is rich and has a little shine to it (it’s not sparkly, it’s luminous) and it seems to have a lip stain in it, as even after I’ve eaten and the original coat has worn off, the color is stained on my lips. This is one of my lipstick prerequisites, as I hate having to reapply often. I highly recommend this range!

When my sister was looking for a lipstick for her wedding, I took her to try this at the beauty counter – she loved it and bought a rich red shade from the Estee Lauder Pure Color Matte Lipstick range, the color is called ‘Decisive Poppy’.

Friday Faves – My Skincare Must Haves

I believe beautiful style starts with getting the basics right and glowing skin is paramount. One of my favorite beauty treatments is a weekly face mask and every second night doing a scrub. It’s perfect to give your skin an instant pick-me-up!

When it comes to products, over the years I’ve tried some duds, they promise the world and deliver… well, not much at all. I hate spending my hard-earned money on products that just don’t work and I’m sure you do too! So today, I wanted to share with you the best face masks and scrubs that really do make a difference. I found them through looking at Amazon’s best sellers, so I’m not alone in being obsessed with them…

best face masks

The Best Face Masks:  Algenist Algae Brightening Mask    |   Aztec Secret Clay Mask   |   Glam Glow Supermud Clearing Treatment

I’ve mentioned it before, but my absolute favorite is this Algae Brightening Mask. I work quite long hours and sometimes don’t get enough sleep, so it can really add up and make you feel anything but fabulous. If I want to brighten, smooth and get rid of blemishes, my go-to is this algae mask. You only need to put it on for ten minutes, but some nights I decide to sleep in it (haha yes –  at times I need a real pick-me-up!) and it truly works wonders. If you want to see a real difference, really fast, I can’t recommend it enough.

The other one I’m obsessed with (and has almost 2,500 five-star reviews) is Aztec Secret clay mask. I don’t even know where to begin – it’s a deep pore cleansing treatment and has been dubbed “the world’s most powerful facial.  This clay mask does incredible things to fix pimples and black heads, plus your skin feels tight (in a the best kind of way)… oh and it’s less than $10. Seriously amazing! I wore this every day in the lead up to my wedding (and so did my bridesmaids).

The last one is the Glam Glow Supermud Clearing Treatment Mask. This formula was clinically developed to help fix acne, blackheads, uneven skin tone, razor bumps and in-grown hair. The mud draws out dirt and congestion, while the six-acid blend brightens and softens skin. It also has Activated-X Charcoal, which leaves skin smooth and healthy-looking.

The-Best-Skin-Exfoliators

The Best Skin Exfoliators:
1.  Algenist Multi-Perfecting Detoxifying Exfoliator
2.  Murad Pore Reform Skin Smoothing Polish
3.  Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment (a cult beauty product known in Hollywood as the two-minute facial, it also repeatedly wins ‘beat beauty product’ awards)
4.  Caudalie Deep Cleansing Exfoliator

Do you use a face mask or exfoliator scrub as part of your beauty routine? Let me know if you have a favorite (I love discovering new beauty products!).

Friday Faves – My Bridal Skincare Routine

With our wedding just over TWO weeks away (Sunday the 5th of March is coming up so quickly!), I’m giving my skin lots of love and extra care.  I always try to use the most natural products I can, but am really fussy because they have to be effective and really pack punch.

To say I’m obsessed with the Jurlique is an understatement! I’ve used this Clarifying Deep Cleanser for years, it truly keeps my skin fresh and blemish-free. I also recently added the Rosewater Balancing Mist, Herbal Recovery Advanced Serum and Herbal Recovery Night Cream to my routine. They smell divine! You know that gorgeous scent luxe products at day spa’s have? Every night I’m like ahh… it just makes your soul feel good.

Of course even more than that, I’ve noticed my skin really looks alive and has a pretty glow, it’s also much more balanced (areas where I was dry or oily have evened out). With all the wedding prep and late nights organising things, my skin started to look dull and tired… so I knew I had to up my game.

I really wanted to start sharing the skincare routine I’ve found effective and if your skin’s in need of a little TLC, I’d definitely recommend the Jurlique range. You can check out their best sellers here. I always like seeing the products other people love!

Have you tried his range before? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
