If you’ve been around here long enough, I’m sure you would have seen my penchant for hair color changes. In the last year I have switched from light blonde to brown, to dark brown, to balayage and all the way back again. Last week I just switched back to brown again… although I ponder going lighter on a daily basis (I like to keep my hairdresser on her toes, she never knows what I’m going to do). For my fellow color lovers, this is a great guide to choosing the perfect hue for your hair.
I’d love to know your thoughts, should I stay brown or go back lighter?
Today I’d also like to chat about some new haircare products Schwarzkopf sent me to experience – and for any Australian readers, you can join their nationwide search for Australia’s Most Beautiful Hair (the winner will receive a photoshoot with Tash Sefton and Elle Ferguson from They All Hate Us and $2,000 spending money – enter here!).
The Great Hair Color Debate – Brown vs Blonde
I was chatting to one of my friends recently about what our true natural hair color would be… and we had no idea! We thought a lot of other woman might be the same, having colored our hair for years and years. So I wanted to ask you, are you like us and aren’t sure exactly what your real hair color is?
For my fellow coloristas out there, I wanted to share a little celebrity hair inspiration… as I am sure at some point we’ve all taken a photo into the salon and said “Give me a Jennifer!”. I’d love to hear what you think of their color transformations, do they suit brown or blonde best? Vote below or leave a comment about who’s golden and who’s not.
My Color Haircare and Favorite Products
This new-found carefree approach I’ve had to hair color is a big change, as for the first 25 years of my life I was blonde. Like, really blonde. Through coloring back and forth as I experiment to find my next 25-year shade, I have become a million times more aware of the condition of my hair. I was never good at doing regular hair treatments or masks, but I now use them religiously and it has transformed my hair in a major way.
I’ve tried lots of different shampoos, conditioners, masks, hot oils, glosses, creams and serums… and I’m very picky. So when Schwarzkopf contacted me about experiencing some of their collection, I was delighted! I’m all about smooth, shiny, soft hair (that smells amazing!) and as you may have noticed, my go-to look is either straight or beachy waves… but regardless of style, I like to keep my routine simple. After enjoying lots of new Schwarzkopf products (I was actually very impressed with all of them!), my favorites would have to be their Essence Ultime Diamond Color collection (as pictured below). Developed with Claudia Schiffer, the range made my hair not only wonderfully soft and smooth (seriously, after I used the Shampoo and Mask there was not a tangle to be had – I barely needed to brush my hair!), it also gave me the bright shine I so madly covet via their Shine Boost Spray.
Two other products I fell in love with are the 6 Miracles Oil Essence and Instant Volume Powder (which ended up becoming a topic of conversation at a girls dinner on Saturday! I was chatting about the range and one of my friends asked if I’d tried the Volume Powder as it is her holy grail hair product… yes, yes I had and now I can’t imagine a high pony tail or day between blow-dry without it. It really does give your roots fabulous volume and is a perfect little freshen-up).
No one likes to spend aaages doing their hair (especially on weekends!), so I thought I’d share what I did last weekend to get the most out of one styling session:
1. I curled my hair with GHD flat irons (you’ll find my recent instructions and tutorial here).
2. To hold the curls, I used Schwarzkopf Strong Styling Hairspray – and kept my hair perfect all day!
3. The next morning, I started by gently brushing through my curls and used Schwarzkopf Volume Powder on the roots to freshen up my hair. You don’t need much, a little goes a long way.
4. Pull your hair up into a pony tail. For a smooth finish, I tilt my head right back and tie the pony tail high. Once you’ve tied it, hold the hair each side near the band and pull slightly upwards and outwards, this will help give you extra height and a fun, bouncy look. Your soft day-old curls will give you an amazing pony tail!
5. If your hair is a similar length to mine, add bobby pins underneath to keep any short pieces up and use a little spritz of Styling Hairspray, it will keep your hair glam all day.
Are you a current Schwarzkopf user? Have you tried any of these products? I’d love to know your thoughts (and if you’re also addicted to the Volume Powder!).
