Some say, they are the frames to the windows of your soul (ok, that’s probably just me), but the once humble brow is here to wow – and they can transform your face in an instant.

This season it’s all about the power brow. Gone are the days of an over zealous tweezer binge in the bathroom, top models and actresses are leading the way when it comes to the strong, full and fluffy eyebrow. Look to beauties such as Miranda Kerr, Lauren Conrad, Camilla Belle, Kim Kardashian, Diane Kruger and Jessica Alba for inspiration.

But how do you attain this trend and make it work for you? Over the last year, in conjunction with transitioning my hair to a darker hue, I’ve also been adopting a more defined brow and I must say, I love it! I think if it’s done well and the right products are used, it can really frame your face and make your eyes pop!

Here are some tools of the trade to help you on your way…

Tool Kit:  Yves Saint Laurent Eyebrow Pencil  |  Benefit Brow Kit  |  M.A.C Brow Gel  |  Bare Mineral Brow Powder Color  |  M.A.C Eyebrow Pencil  |  Smashbox Brow Palette  |  Nordstrom Lash & Brow Groomer  |  Tweezerman Zebra Slant Tweezers  |  Laura Mercier Brow Definer  |  Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Highlighter Duo

Gorgeous brows start with great grooming, follow these simple tips:

  1. I find the easiest way to get everything right is to simply use a pencil or pen – not to draw, but to measure! Your eyebrows should start in line with the edge of your nose, so place the pen vertically against the length of your nose, this is where your inside eyebrow should start.
  2. Rotate the pencil from the outer corner of your nose to the outer corner of your eye, this is where your eyebrow should end.
  3. I love a nice eyebrow arch and placement is crucial! As a guide, the arch should be aligned with the outer edge of your iris.
  4. To create a great platform for the future, I would recommend using a brow artist to shape your eyebrows initially. After that, it’s simply a matter of maintaining this by brushing brows into shape, then tweezing any new growth or strays (keep in mind the pencil guide above!)
  5. To give brows a strong and full look, I like to use a pencil. In fact, I prefer using a slightly blunt pencil – the key is to keep everything looking natural and if a pencil is too sharp, it will come across quite harsh and very drawn on… that’s not a cute look! So simply run it over the back of your hand a couple of times or a piece of paper to blunt the tip.
  6. Before applying, brush the brows into shape (usually the pencil comes with a little brush, or if you’re stuck, a toothbrush can do the trick!)
  7. To apply the pencil, I recommend using short, firm strokes. You don’t want to draw a line from one end of your brow to the other – that’s not how real brow hair is. To mimic the natural eyebrow aesthetic, I usually start by using firm, slightly longer (but still quite short) strokes on my outer edge and work in to about half way. Then I head to the opposite end (the inner eyebrow) and work inwards using medium pressure with short strokes. Finally, you’ll piece them together to fill the middle section and arch.
  8. Then use the brow brush to soften and blend the applied color along the brow line.
  9. To keep your brows perfect all day, apply a brow gel. Or sometimes I even add a little spritz of hairspray to my brow brush (or a toothbrush!) and gently brush this through.
  10. For an instant, eye-opening lift and to really highlight your gorgeous shape, place some highlighter beneath your brow, along the line of the arch and blend well.

Do you have any great brow tips? I’d love to hear about them!
What are your thoughts of the trend towards this strong, defined look?
